On my third visit to Kauai I made my second hike down the Napali Coast along the Kalalau Trail. It took us almost nine hours to reach our destination, the Kalalau Beach. We camped one night and hiked out the next day. Our return trip on the Kalalau Trail only took us seven hours to get back to the trailhead. When started our journey we encountered some wet trails for the first few miles. The north side of Kauai gets a lot of rain and is more of a tropical area. There are some serious elevation changes in the first few miles of the hike making many people question whether they should take on the rest of the trail but once you pass Hanakoa Valley the Kalalau Trail takes on a more desert like terrain and the drastic elevation changes start to diminish.
The Kalalau Trail is a beautiful but strenuous, hazardous hike. It should not be taken lightly. If you desire to see the beauty of the Napali Coast please prepare yourself for the journey, it's far from easy.
